This month’s program: The Spanish Trail

Presented by Steven H. Heath

The Old Spanish Trail was an important trade route connecting New Mexico and California, used extensively from 1829 to 1848. Today, portions of the route are preserved and recognized as part of the Old Spanish National Historic Trail, established by Congress in 2002.

In this presentation, Steven H. Heath will highlight the trail and historic sites in Utah, with special attention to Southern Utah. He will explore the trail’s history and its significance as a National Historic Trail.

About the Presenter:

Steven H. Heath is a retired Mathematics Professor from Southern Utah University and a longtime student of history. He holds degrees in mathematics and history, including a master’s degree in the History of Science from the University of Utah. He currently serves as the Utah Director of the Old Spanish Trail Association.

Steven has a particular interest in Utah’s National Monuments and National Parks, the early history of Mormonism, and other aspects of Utah history. An avid hiker, he has visited numerous historic and scenic sites throughout Southern Utah.

Our Third Weekend Events run from October through May, bringing together historians, storytellers, and community members for an engaging Saturday morning of history and heritage.
