History of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The History of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is deeply rooted in pioneer faith, music, and community. Founded in 1847, the choir—now known as The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square—has grown from a small group of pioneer singers into one of the most recognized choirs in the world.

At our December Third Weekend Event, museum visitors enjoyed a special presentation by Jon Green, a former member of the Choir, who shared insights into its humble beginnings, growth, and lasting cultural impact. His presentation highlighted how music strengthened early pioneer communities and continues to inspire audiences today.

The Choir’s legacy reflects the same values preserved at the McQuarrie Memorial Museum: service, dedication, and the power of shared stories. From early territorial Utah to international broadcasts, the Choir’s music has carried messages of hope across generations.
