If you missed our May Third Weekend Event, you can now watch the full presentation, “Ghost Towns of Washington County,” presented by Loren Webb at the McQuarrie Memorial Pioneer Museum.
This fascinating presentation explored several of Washington County’s historic ghost towns — places that once bustled with pioneer life but now survive mainly through stories, ruins, and historical records.
🏜️ Exploring Washington County’s Ghost Towns
Loren Webb shared the history of Grafton, one of Utah’s most picturesque and recognizable ghost towns, along with the lesser-known communities of Fort Harmony, Hebron, and Shunesburg.
These settlements played important roles in Southern Utah’s pioneer history. Through floods, earthquakes, changing economies, and the challenges of frontier life, each community faced struggles that ultimately shaped its fate.
📜 Preserving Forgotten Stories
Ghost towns remind us that history is not only found in thriving cities, but also in places left behind. Their stories offer insight into the resilience, hardships, and determination of the early settlers who helped shape Washington County.
We are grateful to Loren Webb for sharing his research and helping bring these communities back to life through history and storytelling.
